From an original population of about 25,000 , by the Second World War, there were fewer than fifty individuals remaining. At the time of publication, efforts at Pohakuloa and Slimbridge had increased the worldwide stock to more than 2,000 birds, and efforts were underway to reintroduce the bird to the wild. This is the American edition of Poyser's original title, the two books being to all intents and purposes identical.
