First comes a series of chapters presenting the birds of the world - illuminating their variety, their structure and adaptation, their fossil past, their evolutionary present, their distribution, and their behaviour. Then comes a detailed and stimulating section on bird watching, its purpose, delights, disciplines and techniques. Thirdly comes a remarkable and unique classification and family distribution presentation, with strikingly original family and subfamily maps. Lastly, a stimulating and timely essay on birds and men, with a healthy analysis of all the problems that beset their peaceful and continued co-existence. The text mentions 1173 species, and 743 are illustrated, 668 of them in colour. More than 200 maps are a distinctive feature which shows the past and present distribution of every bird family and the larger subfamilies, together with a modern classification of birds with a complete census of the known forms of each group. The beautiful Peterson paintings in the first 96 pages are reproduced in eight-colour litho, as is the jacket.
